'Chana dal' recipe

Today we will make 'Chana dal' recipe.
Let's do it.
Some hindi meanings of ingredients are written in brackets.
Chana dal recipe:
Cooking time: 45 minutes 
Servings: 4-6 persons 
Utensils used:
    1 pot 
    1 frypan 
    1 ladle ( kadshi in hindi )
    1 teaspoon ( or chhota chamch )
    1 tablespoon ( or bada chamch )
    1 strainer (chhanani) ( optional)

Ingredients:
  1. Chana dal : 1 bowl ( or 300 gram )
  2. Refined oil : 2 ladles 
  3. Cumin seeds( jeera)  : 1/2 tablespoon
  4. Big cardamom ( badi elaichi ) : 1
  5. Green cardamom ( hari elaichi): 2 
  6. Clove (laung) : 2
  7. Tej patta: 1
  8. Onion: 2 finely chopped or paste 
  9. Garlic : 6-8 pieces finely chopped or paste 
  10. Ginger : 1 tablespoon finely chopped or paste 
  11. Tomatoes : 2 medium size finely chopped or 1 bowl tomato puree 
  12. Salt: According to your taste 
  13. Green chilli ( hari mirch) : 3 finely chopped 
  14. Coriander ( dhaniya) powder: 1 tablespoon 
  15. Red chilli ( lal mirch) powder : 1/2 teaspoon 
  16. Black pepper ( kali mirch ) powder : 1/2 teaspoon 
  17. Turmeric ( haldi) powder: 1/2 teaspoon 
  18. Garam masala : 1/2 tablespoon
  19. Fresh coriander : 1 tablespoon finely chopped for garnishing 

Pre-preparation :
  • Wash 300 gm chana dal . Soak  this  chana dal in water for 4 hours. 
Procedure: 
  • Drain water from soaked chana dal. Put this dal in pot , add 1 and half  litre water for boiling . Boil this dal for nearly 30 minutes.
  • While dal is boiling, let's prepare masala for dal. Put 2 ladles refined oil into frypan. When oil becomes hot, add tej patta, big cardamom,  green cardamom,  cumin seeds , garlic , ginger . After 1 minute put  2 finely chopped onions. Saute for nearly 5 minutes until onions become translucent. Now, add coriander powder , turmeric powder,  red chilli powder. After 1 minute add finely chopped tomatoes and salt. Saute for 5 minutes. Cover frypan with lid and simmer for nearly 5 minutes at low flame until masala start looking oil or properly cooked.In between, Whenever masala looks dry or start sticking,  you can add 1 or 2 tablespoons after every 3-4 minutes. Now, masala is ready to mix with dal.
  • On the other side,  dal is boiled and become soft . You can check by pressing with fingers. Strain dal from water with strainer or if you want to use this water there is no need to strain. Add dal to masala . If you have strained the  water then add half litre water . If you have not strained the  water then you can add a little water .Add 2 finely chopped green chillies. Cover the lid and cook for 10 or 15 minutes on medium and then at low  flame. In between, check if dal is not sticking with surface. Use ladle to stir. When dal reaches the required thickness, according to whether you like thick or diluted dal. Turn gas off,  add garam masala and garnish with finely chopped fresh coriander and 1 finely chopped green chilly. Chana dal is ready to serve.
